The History of Military Vehicles
The 100year story of the military vehicle can be divided into two periods. During the first four decades, military vehicles differed little from civilian types. The first trucks used on western front in 1914 were basic commercial vehicles. In reality many were simply civilian vehicles commandeered by the military. Few were equipped with four-wheel drive or even pneumatic tyres. These primitive early trucks were unreliable and easily stopped by the cratered ground of the battlefield.
The advent of world war 2 changed everything and civilian markets began to diverge. Few civilian companies had any need for all-wheel drive, or for vehicles that could float or be driven in deep water. Specialized vehicles began to emerge, including powerful artillery tractors, missile transporter-erector-launchers, tank transporters, bridging vehicles and amphibious vehicles.
In the six decades since the end o f world war 2 this divergence has continued. Most military planners recognize that standard commercial vehicles are fit only for non-battlefront duties. The modern purpose designed military vehicle is a powerful and manoeuvrable machine, which has little similarity to the design of vehicles available for use by commercial companies.
