Renault TRM 700-100T
The Renault TRM 700-100T tractor was first shown at the annual Satory defence equipment exhibition in 1987. It was designed to be used as the transporter for France's Leclerc main battle tank in conjunction with a Nicolas SFD A6 70-ton semi-trailer.
In 1987, Renault Vehicles Industrials(RVI) had also acquired a 10 per cent stake in the US company Mack Trucks. This led to the TRM 700-100 being powered by a 16,400cc Mack E9 V8 diesel, driving through a hydraulic torque converter and six-speed automatic gearbox with electronic control. The transfer case, which provided permanent all-wheel drive in the ratio of 33 per cent to the front and 67 percent to the rear, was integral with the gearbox, Cross-axle and inter-axle differential locks were also fitted. All three axles were equipped with double-reduction gears. Suspension was by semi-elliptical multi-leaf springs, inverted at the rear and located by torque reaction arms, An auxiliary equalizer spring was fitted at the front, together with hydraulic double-acting shock absorbers.
The truck was fitted with a tiltable four-door crew cab, broadly derived from that used on the TRM 10000 truck, but lengthened to provide seating for a driver and a crew of four. The fifth wheel was placed across the centreline of the rear bogie at a height of 1,640mm/65in. A pair of 15-ton hydraulic winches could be specified for installation behind the cab to assist with loading disabled tanks.
Following an extended period of evaluation, an initial 179 vehicles were ordered for the French Army in March 1994, with deliveries due to begin the following year. A second order was subsequently placed for a further 121 vehicles for delivery in the years 2000 to 2002.
