Mercedes-Benz G Class
The military vehicle that is universally known as the G-Wagen was first manufactured by the Austrian company Gelaendewagenfahrzeug Gessellschaft (GFG) in1979. Although it was originally sold on the civilian market, the design had been inspired by proposals for a military vehicle by Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi of Iran in the early 1970s.
At the time, GFG was part-owned by Mercedes-Benz and Steyr-Daimler-Puch. When GFG closed down in the early 1980s, Steyr-Daimler-Puch continued to produce the vehicle under direct contract to Mercedes-Benz. In 1980, Peugeot entered the vehicle in a competition held by the French Army to find a replacement for the ageing Hotchkiss M201 Jeep. The Peugeot entry was selected against competition from Citroen and Renault, and entered service as the Peugeot license-built P4 in 1982.
The Austrian-built original is generally now described as the Mercedes-Benz G Class and has undergone continuous development since it was first launched. The vehicle was originally produced in a choice of two wheelbases-2400mm/94in and 2850mm/112in - but the original shorter wheelbase has been added. There are currently four body variations: station wagon, van, open cargo vehicle( which can also be configured as a weapons mount) and chassis-cab for special body-word, including and ambulance for forward areas. A crew cab is also available, as are armoured variants. The engine is a 2874cc five-cylinder turbocharged common-rail diesel driving both axles through a four-speed automatic gearbox and two-speed transfer box. Suspension is by live axles on coil springs located by longitudinal and transverse linds. Both the front and rear axles include differential locks.
Since its launch, more than 60,000 Mercedes G Class have been supplied to more than 24 nations, including Germany, USA and Ireland.
The G Class is produced also under license by the Hellenic Vehicle Industry in Greece as the 290GD.
