Ford G198TS
Ford-Werke was founded in Berlin in 1925 to import US-built Ford vehicles. Demand for the vehicles was such that a new assembly plant was built the following year, and within ive years, this had been replaced by a new factory in koIn(Cologne, manufacturing cars and trucks for the German market.
When the US-based Ford company introduced a new 3-ton 4X2 truck in 1940, Ford KoIn produced the same a year later. The German truck, designated G198TS, was powered by a 3,923cc V8 petrol engine, driving the rear wheels through a five-speed gearbox. In 1943, the G198TS was superseded by the G398TS, with a deeper radiator and cooling slots in the front. From October that year, shortages of steel saw the standard steel replaced by the utility Vehrmacht Einheits cab of compressed cardboard and timber. At the same time, the front mudguards were simplified in shape.
The Wehrmacht described the truck as the V3000S.Between 1941 and 1945, some25,000 were built, 14,000 as the half-track Maultier(Mule). During the latter stages of the war, shortages of fuel often led to the use of a wood-gas generator. This system burned air-dried wood or anthracite to produce carbon monoxide gas that was used in place of petrol.
Ford G398SAM
Dating from 1956, the Ford G398SAM was designed for the German Bundeswehr to comply with NATO specifications for medium-weight multiterrain trucks. It had been developed from a post-war 3-ton 4X4 chassis that Ford had produced for the British and US occupying forces. Like these, and the wartime G198TS/G398TS, the truck was powered by the reliable 3,923cc Ford V8 side-valve engine, driving all four wheels through a four-speed gearbox and two-speed transfer box.
Frequently nicknamed "Sam" for obvious reasons, it was a curiously angular truck, produced with both open and closed steel cabs. most were fitted with a steel cargo/personnel body. Other variants included vehicles bodied for the office(Kofferbau), field kitchen, ambulance, radar, tipper, workshop, and communications roles. A chassis variant (G398SAM-S3) was also available for special bodywork. Some examples were fitted with a winch. The truck remained in production form 1956 to 1961.
