Citroen Type 46 F, 46F T
Never a company to shy away from innovation, the Citroen Type 46 F air-portable cargo truck is typical of the company's approach to design. Originally described as the Transoceanic, the first prototype was completed in 1957 and was based on the company's 5-ton Type 55U track which had been converted to all-wheel drive by Herwaythorn. When production started in 1964, there were both 3-ton and 5-ton variants, the latter identifiable by twinned rear wheels. Frequently designated " FOM"(Forces d'Outre Mer), the truck was designed to provide exceptional off-road performance, and was intended for use by the French Overseas Forces.
Power was provided by a 5,180cc six-cylinder engine, with both petrol and diesel versions available, driving through a five-speed manual gearbox and two-speed transfer box. Unusually for Citroen, who tended to favor unconventional suspension arrangements, the axles were hung on normal semi-elliptical springs with hydraulic shock absorbers. The suspension was capable of extremes of articulation, particularly at the front.
The Type 46 F/T differed from the Type 46F by being equipped with a front-mounted 5-ton winch. The standard variant was fitted with a steel drop-side cargo/personnel body, which had bench seats for 16 fully equipped men, and was occasionally fitted with a machine-gun ring mount. Other variants included a container vehicle, refrigerator van, fuel/water tanker, flat-bed truck, recovery and communications vehicles.A long-range.
As well as being used by the French Army, the vehicle was supplied to Cameroon, Chad, Ivory Coast, Mauritania, Senegal and Upper Volta. Production ended in 1967.
